2017 is quickly coming to a close. And what better time to remember the best that the silver screen has graced us with? Without further ado, check my own Top 10 Best Movies of the Year!
Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes comes as the final chapter of Caesar's journey from a science experiment to a great leader. While not as "wow" as the previous movie, the third entry of the rebooted franchise managed to serve as an emotional goodbye to the ape revolution, led by an awe-inducing Andy Serkis.
Marvel seems to keep making big risks with its properties. While Marvel at its beating heart, Spider-Man: Homecoming couldn't be much different from the rest of the MCU movies, trading a tipically over-the-top, special-effects-heavy movie with a coming-of-age take centered on a charismatic Tom Holland as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
In a sense, I am not a fan of the horror genre. Still, I tip my hat to director Andy Muschietti by delivering a movie that mixes the horror elements with a sweet coming-of-age tale of The Losers Club. Not to mention Bill Skarsgard as a truly frightening Pennywise, the Dancing Clown!
Got to hand it to Edgar Wright: he knows how to make a good movie out of a silly premise. With cars stunts that seemed right out of the Fast & Furious franchise, wonderful performances (with Ansel Elgort as the highlight) and a catchy set of tunes, Baby Driver is a fun heist movie like no other.
It's always movie history when Christopher Nolan sets his sight into a new movie. This time, he brings the tale of the brave soldiers trying to find their way out of Dunkirk, France. It's a masterclass of how a movie SHOULD be made through practical effects.
Taika Waititi at the helm of a Marvel movie? It could mean a big disaster. Nevertheless, Waititi managed to play with our expectations and deliver one of the funniest Marvel movies to date, despite suffering some Marvel problems.
Some may say that it was a breath of fresh, considering how Rian Johnson subverted the fans' expectations; other fight to take the movie out of the main canon. I stand with the first crowd of fans. While not a better sequel for the whole franchise - Empire Strikes Back is still the best, period - The Last Jedi tries its best to mark itself out of the crowd, with stunning visual and charismatic performances throughout the movie's runtime.
After making a strong debut in the highly polarizing "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", Gal Gadot, with Patty Jenkins in the director's chair, delivers one of the best DCEU movies yet. It's fresh, it's dramatic, it's funny. It's also the step on the right direction that the DCEU absolutely needs to stay relevant in a market movie in which Marvel still reigns supreme!
After years as the Peele of Key & Peele, Jordan Peele makes his directorial debut with this "social thriller" While simple in its concept, it also grants an important racial message to its target audience. We weren't expecting this one from a comedy star!
Hugh Jackman makes his final goodbye to one of his most iconic roles of his career. Thankfully, it's also a good movie that pays the respect that Wolverine deserved in the first place. It's an emotional rollercoaster ride that turns the movie into the very best that 2017 has to offer movie-wise!
